Reporting to:

Finance Director

We are seeking a hands on Financial Controller to oversee the club’s full financial function, working across all areas of the business including Football, Commercial, Hospitality and Community Partnerships.


Managing a small, friendly and diligent finance team, you will ensure the maintenance of an effective financial control framework, provide insightful financial reporting and ensure the smooth running of the day-to-day financial operations of the company.  


The role offers both operational responsibility and strategic influence, requiring a reliable and focused operator with a passion for supporting the club’s ambitions through robust financial stewardship.   


This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of one of Scotland’s most iconic football clubs from behind the scenes.


Key responsibilities:


Management and Statutory Accounting

  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly management accounts including review of month end balance sheet reconciliations and control accounts
  • Prepare monthly Board reporting pack, ensuring relevant commentary and commercial insight is provided to the Board and Executive Management
  • Lead liaison with external auditors; support in production of annual statutory accounts for the company in compliance with relevant accounting standards

Finance Operations and Working Capital Management

  • Oversee and review accounts payable, accounts receivable and cash management activities
  • Oversee and review monthly payroll processing and payment of employee expenses, in line with internal policies.
  • Provide robust management of day-to-day working capital of the company, including maintenance of detailed and reliable cashflow forecasts
  • Manage merchant services arrangements and provision of effective financial support to hospitality, ticketing and retail operations

Control Environment and Systems

  • Maintain the overall financial control environment, ensuring policies, procedures and processes are designed effectively and adhered to by the business 
  • Champion continuous process improvement and adoption of best practices and new technologies
  • Responsible for the operation of company’s finance system, Netsuite, supporting systems and related contract management activities

Budgeting, Forecasting and Commercial Support 


  • Play a key role in the company’s budgeting and forecasting processes, consolidating and reviewing inputs from across the business, ensuring appropriate challenge, rigour and accountability is applied
  • Develop a deep understanding of club operations (e.g. matchday, hospitality, player transfers) to support cost control and revenue growth
  • Provide ad-hoc financial analysis, decision support and commercial advice on key contracts and procurement activities, enabling management of financial risk

Taxation & Regulatory Compliance


  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of VAT and corporation tax returns, liaising with professional advisors where needed
  • Support in compliance with other statutory requirements and provision of financial information to Football Authorities

General

  • Manage the Finance team on a day-to-day basis, maintaining a positive team culture and providing opportunities for development
  • Trusted advisor to the Finance Director and the Executive Leadership team in shaping the strategic direction of the business, driving long-term financial sustainability
  • Deputise for the Finance Director as required and support in managing relationships with bankers, auditors, professional advisors and other key stakeholders

Requirements & remuneration

  • Strong financial modelling and excel skills using up to date analytical forecasting tools.
  • Brilliant problem- solving and analytical skills gained in a financial environment
  • Ability to build effective relationships across the business to support and challenge key financial assumptions.
  • Effective communication skills, with ability to convey detailed data driven analysis in a simple, clear and concise form.
  • Commercial acumen, demonstrating business understanding and key drivers of performance.
  • Chartered Accountant qualification (or equivalent) is preferred, with a minimum of 5 years of overall combined accounting and finance experience (minimum 2 years post qualification).

  • A natural curiosity and drive to know more.
  • Hardworking with an eye for detail – must enjoy working in a hands on environment within a small, tight knit team
  • Resilience and have a mindset that embraces change.
  • Experience and knowledge of the football industry would be beneficial although not essential.


  • Competitive salary dependent on experience

  • 20 days per calendar year plus 8 bank holidays. Incremental additional days (1 per year of service up to a maximum of 5)

Heart of Midlothian Innovation and Business Support Centre 

The Innovation Centre was officially launched at Tynecastle Park on May 28th, 2019. The launch followed on from a series of successful Digital Education programmes that have attracted several hundred school children between the ages of eight and sixteen. Working in partnership with learning providers, schools and businesses, programmes use the magnet of football and the unique position of HMFC in the community to attract and motivate young people of all ages to acquire vital skills for Scotland’s burgeoning digital economy.



The official launch of the Innovation Centre also covered the opening of a new Business Support facility. Designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs as well as established companies, the programmes on offer will provide advice and encouragement for people looking to set up their own enterprises as well as those struggling to sustain existing businesses. Play the Game Initiative 

Play the Game is a new initiative created by Heart of Midlothian Football Club which has been developed to support the thousands of people involved in the grassroots game. Maroon Mile

The Foundation of Hearts and HMFC are delighted to announce that they have been successful in securing significant funding of £207,339.00 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for their planned Maroon Mile project. The announcement comes as Hearts Heritage Department unveils plans for continued celebrations of the Club’s Sesquicentennial. Hearts is celebrating its 150-year anniversary in 2024; a history and a future which was assured by the Foundation of Hearts, one of the most significant supporter-led movements in football.

  • Qualified accountant (CA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Strong finance systems experience (Netsuite preferred)
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in standard office packages
  • Proven ability to build effective cross-functional relationships and provide constructive challenge
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to present insights clearly and concisely
  • Excellent communications skills and strong commercial acumen
  • Passion for the role football can play in bringing positive change to the community

  • The successful candidate must enjoy working in a hands-on environment with a small tight-knit team
  • Experience managing the various functions of finance in an SME environment would be beneficial.  The role is focused on bringing all the aspects of finance together in a c£25m turnover business.
  • Previous line management experience, ideally having managed a small finance team (or parts thereof), is preferred
  • Experience in a similar business (football/sport/hospitality industries) may be beneficial but is not essential
  • An understanding of the unique financial landscape faced by football clubs would be beneficial
  • The role will suit a resilient individual who enjoys working with others and combines strong attention to detail with organisational capabilities
